Most students are provided with a variety of option every day, and although the dessert bar may be very tempting, try to limit the number of times you visit it every week. Avoid anything that is processed, covered in cheese or dressing, and greasy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scheduling times to eat is also important. When you register for classes, look at the day with meals in mind. You should have enough time in the morning to get ready for the day and grab a quick meal, either in your dorm room or at the cafeteria. You should also plan times to stop for nutritious snacks, like fruit. If your professor does not mind, you can also take these snack foods with you to class. The research shows that calorie restriction leads to a reduction in levels of triiodothyronine (T3), a hormone produced by the thyroid gland and with an important role in controlling body's metabolism. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The study involved men and women between 50 and 60 years of age who were healthy and nonsmokers, but were sedentary. For a year a group lowered their daily calorie intake between 300 and 500 calories a day, a second group continued with their normal diet that was added to the practice of exercise and another group maintained their daily routine. Both that reduced calories in the diet such as that practiced exercise lost weight, but only those who were in the calorie restriction group had lower levels of thyroid hormone. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In another investigation of Washington University in Saint Louis (USA), a team led by Luigi Fontana compared the level of thyroid hormone in 28 adults who performed with a calorie restricted diet (1,800) between 3 and 15 years, with another group of 28 sedentary adults who ate a typical Western diet with 2,700 calories and with 28 athletes with the same caloric intake. In the group that consumed fewer calories were found lower levels of T3. Not only that: the levels of body fat had no effect on the levels of T3, which means that it is not the thinness which affects the thyroid, but restricting calories. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The key lies in the thyroid &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;For some time studies have shown that reducing calorie intake slows the aging process in rats and mice. But why a diet with fewer calories lowers metabolism? It seems that the key lies in the thyroid gland. One of the possible mechanisms involved would be that the caloric reduction lowers the levels of thyroid hormone T3.
